Natures Calling’s Toilet Designs

AND ADDITIONAL EXTRAS

How do they work?

Composting toilets work much like your household loo — just without wasting clean water or sending waste to outdated treatment plants.

Instead, they use a contained, odour-free system where natural microorganisms break down waste into compost. Liquids and solids are separated, and a simple cover material like wood shavings or coconut coir absorbs moisture, removes smells, and starts the composting process straight away.

The result is a safe, nutrient-rich compost that can be used around trees, hedgerows or to enrich soil — a natural, water-saving alternative for off-grid living.

We’ve spent the past few years refining two compost toilet designs that work beautifully in a range of settings, from campsites to cabins. They’re simple to use, need no plumbing or power, and are built to last.

The Wheelie Green

Available in 75L & 120L sizes

Our Wheelie Green Compost Toilets are simple, reliable, and designed for easy off-grid living — no electricity, no plumbing, and no wasted water. Each one uses a sturdy wheelie bin system that’s robust, easy to move, and makes composting straightforward.

Inside, a liquid separator diverts urine into a gravel-filled soakaway, while a scoop of sawdust after each use keeps things dry, odour-free, and ready to compost naturally. A clear insulated roof and standing-height window flood the space with natural light, and optional solar lighting can be added for evening use.

Every Nature’s Calling toilet is hand-built with natural, sustainable materials, designed to feel warm, spacious, and welcoming — a far cry from the typical plastic portaloo.

The 75L Wheelie Green
Compact and easy to handle, this size is ideal for smaller sites or low-capacity use. The 75L bin is light enough for one person to move, even when full, and provides around 100 person-days of use before changing.

The 120L Wheelie Green
Our medium-sized model, suited to most situations — from campsites and homesteads to allotments and eco-retreats. It offers greater capacity for 160 person-days of use, with fewer bin changeovers while still being easily manageable by one person.

Each toilet comes ready to use, complete with a sawdust bucket and scoop, 6 eco-friendly toilet rolls, an aloe vera hand sanitiser dispenser, and your first batch of fresh cedar shavings from our workshop.

Vintage Reclaimed Hand Wash BasinS

A beautifully restored vintage reclaimed sink adds a touch of rustic charm to your setup.

This outdoor hand wash station makes use of nature’s own supply — collecting rainwater from the roof through guttering into a water butt, ready to use after each visit. A floor-mounted foot pump gives you running water through a custom-made copper tap, with no need for electricity or a mains water connection.

Waste water drains away into a simple gravel soakaway beneath the sink — or, if you prefer, straight into your garden to keep things thriving.

Available with either rainwater harvesting and foot pump or mains water plumbing, depending on your site’s setup.

Our latest designs now feature sealed and vented bins, helping to keep things completely odour-free while allowing the composting process to continue naturally once a bin is full.

The venting system also keeps unwanted flies out, trapping them before they can make themselves at home.

While not an essential addition, it’s a great extra for peace of mind — ensuring that even if someone’s been a little heavy-handed with the loo roll or light on the sawdust, any smells are sealed inside the bin and drawn safely up and away from the cubicle. (Just don’t forget to close the lid!)

FRESH AIR VENT SYSTEMS

Extra Wheelie Bins

Increase the capacity of any Nature’s Calling toilet with additional wheelie bins — giving you a smooth, year-round composting cycle. Depending on your site’s use, you might only need two bins, or perhaps six or seven to see you through the full season.

You can empty bins as they fill, but having a full rotation allows the composting process to take place naturally over time, making emptying far easier and less frequent. Add one of our Fresh Air Vent Systems, and by the time you swap bins, the composting may already be complete.

Get in touch and we’ll help you work out the right number of bins for your setup.
